Cristiano Ronaldo (38, Al Nasr) made headlines with his Islamic ceremony after scoring a crucial comeback goal.
The Portuguese starred in Al Nasr’s home match against Al Shabab in the 28th round of the Saudi Professional League 2023 at Mersul Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday (Sept. 24), scoring a thrilling winner to turn a 2-2 tie into a 3-2 victory.
Ronaldo’s goal was crucial for Al Nasr, who are looking to win the league title. Down 0-2, Al Nasr turned the game on its head to claim three more points and take their tally to 63.
Ronaldo’s performance kept Al Nasr within three points of leaders Al Ittihad (66 points). That leaves them with two games in hand to try and pull off the upset.
Spanish outlet Al-Ahs shared the news of Ronaldo’s come-from-behind goal with a video, calling it “the best goal Ronaldo has scored since he entered Saudi football.”
After scoring the winner, Ronaldo sent the crowd into a frenzy as he celebrated with his teammates on the sideline before dropping to the ground and bowing.
It’s called sajdah or sujud, and refers to the way Muslims kneel and then bow with their forehead, nose, and hands on the ground. 안전놀이터
Ronaldo is a practicing Catholic, and his sudden gesture brought his teammates and the crowd to their feet. The home crowd erupted in applause, chorusing the “shhhh” that Ronaldo makes during the gesture.
Ronaldo has recently seemed keen to leave Al Nasr. “The former Manchester United star already wants to leave Al Nasr,” the British ‘Court Offside’ reported on the 23rd, adding that “Ronaldo is fed up with his current situation and wants to go to Europe or another league if an offer comes his way.”
However, Ronaldo’s ‘sous-a-sous’ gesture today should put those rumors to rest for a while. Ronaldo has scored 14 goals in 15 league games this season.
