It has been reported that manager Enze Postecoglou may leave Son Heung-min out of the starting lineup.
The British publication ‘Evening Standard’ reported on the 18th (KST), “Son Heung-min is struggling to regain his form. Unlike previous managers, Postecoglou could leave him out of the lineup. Heung-min is very suitable to be the captain of Tottenham. However, the problem at the moment is not leadership, but performance.”
Son was named Tottenham captain ahead of the season. After the previous captain, Hugo Lloris, decided to leave the club, a new captain had to be appointed. Harry Kane was the obvious choice for the new captain. Kane is Mr. Tottenham. He came through the Tottenham youth ranks and has spent his entire career at Tottenham, except for a loan spell. But with Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich, Son Heung-min became captain.
“Son Heung-min has been appointed captain of our team,” Tottenham announced on its website on Wednesday. Son inherits the captain’s armband from Yoris. James Maddison and Cristian Romero are the new vice-captains. Heung-min, who is also the captain of the South Korean national soccer team, is now entering his ninth season with Spurs.”
Tottenham hosted Brentford in their opening game. It was Son’s first game as captain. However, it didn’t go well. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with the teams sharing a point. Son’s performance was disappointing. He had two threatening shots, but they didn’t result in goals. On top of that, Son was fouled in the Tottenham penalty box and gave away a penalty kick.
Without Kane, Son will need to step up if Spurs are to be competitive in the league. Son broke into the English Premier League (EPL) in 2015-16 when he donned a Tottenham shirt. He had a rough start to his career. His off-the-ball movement was poor and his ball touch was inaccurate. But Son didn’t give up. He worked on his deficiencies and became one of the best wingers in the EPL.
He led Tottenham’s attack alongside Kane. The peak came in the 2021-22 season. The only time Spurs were not playing well, Son was at his best. His goal-scoring streak helped Spurs compete for a UEFA Champions League (UCL) ticket. Toward the end of the season, Heung-min picked up his scoring pace and scored multiple goals in the league finale to share the EPL scoring title with Mohamed Salah. Spurs advanced to the UCL on the back of Son’s performance. 메이저사이트
Much was expected of Tottenham last season. It was Antonio Conte’s first full season in charge, and Son and Kane were said to be in top form. However, things didn’t go as well as expected. Conte left after a falling out with the club, and Tottenham finished eighth in the league.
Son Heung-min was partly to blame for Spurs’ struggles. He was starting more and more games off the bench as his devastating form from earlier in the season faded. To make matters worse, he suffered a major injury at UCL, fracturing his orbital bone. He played with a mask on, but his struggles continued. Still, he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in the league.
